Congenital adrenal hyperplasia (CAH) is a genetic condition that affects the adrenal glands, which are small organs located on top of your kidneys. CAH impacts how your body produces important hormones including:

• Cortisol - helps manage stress, blood pressure, blood sugar, and energy
• Mineralocorticoids (like aldosterone) - regulate blood pressure and salt/water balance
• Androgens - sex hormones involved in growth and development CAH occurs when there are mutations in the CYP21A2 gene, which provides instructions for making an enzyme called 21-hydroxylase. Without enough of this enzyme, the body can't produce hormones properly, leading to imbalances.

There are two main types:
• Classic CAH - More severe form
• Nonclassic CAH - Milder form with less severe hormone imbalances
